Use of intrauterine balloon tamponade on women with severe postpartum hemorrhage seems to be associated with fewer invasive procedures, such as pelvic vessel ligation, arterial embolization and hysterectomy, suggested a retrospective French cohort study published in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Researchers noted that the rates of invasive procedures were significantly lower in a pilot network of hospitals where this intervention was routinely used, compared to a hospital network that chose to go directly to a more invasive procedure (3.0 per 1,000 deliveries vs. 5.1 per 1,000).
